Collaborative Design with an iPad and Procreate

In recent design workshops at Deicke Richards, I have begun to draw on an IPad with Procreate or with the drawing function in IBooks. With the IPad projected onto the wall, you can present drawings and draw over them to record the discussions and quickly test ideas. This works very well around a large table with 12 or more people as everyone can contribute to the discussion. It is it is hard to get that number looking at an A1 sheet. In a recent workshop, we brought design options for review. It was easy to draw over the plans, clarify points, add notes, then do a screen shot, rub out the drawing and start again. At one point I drew a streetscape view of the emerging preferred option.

It was a pretty ordinary drawing, not really to scale and a bit rough and ready. I decided to redraw it a bit more carefully in Procreate and discovered the time-lapse export function. It is quite compelling to see the drawing appear before your eyes. The plan can't be shown yet due to confidentially, but it is a missing middle scheme with live/work dwellings and low rise balcony access apartments. I think it worked well and am encouraged to keep going with this approach.
